Insight into the 6 modules

Welcome to the engagement section of my praxis journal where I'll reflect upon theory and action across the semester. It's here we I'll try to move beyond the theoretical frameworks and apply it to real-world scenarios throughout my learning journey.

Connection between the 6 modules

Module 1

Module 1 as it suggest is where we begin the process of learning the skills and knowledge on how to investigating and communicate social problems. I learnt the basis of how to do this by exploring the concept of the problem by recognising that each problem has a concept in particular that needs to be solved by using problem – solving skills I learnt that the process of problem solving include:

-          What exactly is a problem?

-          Where do problems come from?

-          What’s involved in solving problems?

-          What are the different types of problems? (Dinham, 2016)

Module 2

Once you develop the skill of problem – solving then you start to develop your critical thinking skills, especially in relation to how information is used and abused. What this means, is when researching information when helping your problem – solve, making sure you use your critical thinking skills in figuring out whether the information your using is misinformation, disinformation, fake news or real. So when it comes to thinking about the information you’re researching you need to think. Thinking is when you believe you know what goes on in your mind which can lead in a progressive way to another, Kahneman, D., (2011)

Module 3

Module 4

Once you’ve collected the data then you need to understand the concept of statistical thinking where it puts emphasis on:

  • Understanding the importance of statistical thinking.
  • Knowing the differences between a population and a sample and the potential problems when sampling
  • Being able to identify and compute proportions from categorical data
  • Being able to perform a hypothesis test for a proportion, when given the proportion distribution
  • Knowing how to structure a good question for statistical analysis

Once you’ve gone through this process than it’s about understanding how to analyse the quantitative date and qualitative data you’ve collected Sarantakos, S. (2013).

Module 5

When going through the research process you need to think about happens if you can't talk to someone?

Sometimes you need to collect research where it is not possible to ask someone face to face. This is where the unobtrustive methods might help. Unobtrusive methods are methods that do not entail an awareness among research participants that they are being studied and that are therefore not subject to reactivity Bryman, A (2012).

Module 6

Whilst you go through modules 1 to 5 you need to start exploring how to communicate with the academic community, and with wider public in a way that offers insight into society's biggest problems. One thing you need to ask yourself throughout this process is Why do I feel uncomfortabletalking in public and why is it important.

This wholst process is learning to EMBRACE THE FEAR!! TEDx Talks, (2019)
