Development of my critical consciouness

How my body language shapes who I am: Even though I knew what Gregersen, T. S. (2007) said about language being conveyed beyond words with the use of body language and that nonverbal communication plays an important role in communication within society, one thing I didn't know until completing Module 6: Is Anyone Listening. Communicating with Diverse Audiences.  As Gunnery and Ruben (2015) explains, when communicating with other individuals, people who use the Duchenne smile are found to be more trustworthy, genuine and authentic.

Engaging with all six modules

Engaging in all these six modules have helped me in terms of thinking of the bigger picture when it comes to contempoary challenges in society and science. There are three societal factors are responsible for the change which include:

  • globalisation in terms of the world's growing iterdependence of economies, cultures, and populations, etc.

  • industrial and post-industrial society in terms of exposition to scholarly literature, mass media, journalisism and knowledge, Krishna (2014)

  • climate change in Western Sydney

Reflecting on theory and action

As a society, we cannot live without language and communication to some degree. Some of the key features of communication for it to be effective include self-confidence, knowledge, empathy, emotional intelligence, reasoning and sympathy anf open-mindedness. This group taks opened up my mind to realising I need to overcome barriers  in order to create a better impression when working with clients as effective communication helps us to understand the client and their situation and enables us build trust and respect and to help problem-solve, Mishra, S. K., & Mishra, P. (2020).

Beyond telling: demonstrating learning

Investigating is a cognitive process that requires critical thinking.  Whilst I was in the tutorial based on module 2, I participated in the 'Sources of Information and Sources of Disinformation' group task where I worked with another student on this task, it made me think more indepth about subjectivity, objectivity and bias. As Munro and Hardie (2018b) explains, conflicting values, political views and preferences can create situations of conflict and that as an individual, we need to be more cautious and critical in our use of knowledge.
